Microsoft Excel is commonly used commercial software, and is often used in industry for collecting and plotting data. It is important for scientists and engineers to communicate work and results effectively, and Excel has built-in functions which can be used for this. Additionally, there are a number of adjustments that can be made to customize the graphs, depending on the information to be conveyed. The goal of this course is to teach students additional skills for plotting graphs that are used in lab reports, homework, or other documents.
This course will expand students’ skills in plotting complicated data sets using Microsoft Excel. Topics include:
- Different plot types, such as bar graphs and scatter plots
- Calculating standard deviation and adding error bars to graphs
- Adding a trendline to a scatter plot
- Sample problem using the scatter plot type which requires:
- Adding a secondary axis for plotting two data sets over one another
- Changing the axis limits, including changing an axis to a logarithmic scale
- Changing font sizes
